The institution of education is a critical space that impacts numerous other institutions. For many communities, education is a site of belonging that has the potential to advance exploration and knowledge which are foundational to an inclusive democracy.
Since 2005, Charles Koch has given over $458 million in grants to over 550 universities across the country. That money has purchased undue academic influence in an attempt to legitimize and bolster political and corporate agendas. From influencing curriculum (including textbooks chosen and courses offered), to faculty hires/fires, fellows selected, and more, the Koch network has been able to mold academic departments and centers to his benefit at campuses across the country for years. The Koch network’s financial influence in higher ed has impacted everything from climate change legislation, reshaping our courts on local, state and federal levels, and much more.
Our recent report details how the Koch network has financed local, state, and national mechanisms to create multiple crises -- only to turn around and cite these same crises as reasons to adopt their free market solutions. The Koch network has made no secret about the critical role that public education plays as an ideal arena for influencing U.S. policy and culture. Through a variety of tactics the Koch network is able to ensure the spread of their regressive ideas, including climate disinformation and radically extractive economics philosophy.
We refuse to allow corporate capture and abuse of our institution of education, and we need you beside us in this fight. Education must place our people, planet, and democracy first!
