UnKoch My Campus’ newest report, “Koch Funded Moral Panic: Ultra Right Think Tanks and Critical Race Theory,” reviewed the published materials of 28 think tanks and political organizations affiliated with the Koch network and analyzed the rhetorical tactics Koch network think tanks have deployed around Critical Race Theory(CRT) and their efforts to ban it from public schools. During the investigation period, we found that Koch network think tanks published 146 articles, podcasts, reports, or videos about CRT.

Koch-affiliated national think tanks like the Heritage Foundation, FreedomWorks, and the Manhattan Institute, among others, have used their influence to generate and spread talking points, brief state and federal legislators on model policy, and mobilize grassroots action against local school districts.

This influence is not without consequence: State politicians were almost entirely silent on the topic until Koch-funded entities started pushing the issue earlier this year. As of November 9th, 28 states have introduced legislation or taken other action that, backers claim, is aimed at banning “critical race theory” (CRT) from schools and government programs. Several of these states have already passed these bills. These attacks are part of a broader, coordinated effort to thwart a multiracial democracy in the lead-up to the 2022 midterm elections.

The Koch network has manufactured this cycle of outrage, and it is dangerous for us to ignore the role they are playing, as well as their motivations. If successful, the anti-CRT campaign will further the Koch network's agenda to capture and privatize the public school system, endanger academic freedom on campuses, and obstruct the broader movement against structural white supremacy.

As any teacher or parent knows, school is a place where children develop their understanding of the world and their ability to make meaningful change in it. However, recently, classrooms have become battlegrounds, where special interest groups are spreading lies about the lessons being taught so they can strip schools of the funding our kids deserve. We reject this division and the manufactured moral panic surrounding Critical Race Theory.

This moment is not a genuine uprising by grassroots Americans who are furious about CRT and demanding action from their state legislatures. But rather, it is a carefully crafted and coordinated campaign of manufactured outrage from the network of radical free-market capitalist think tanks and action groups supported by billionaire businessman Charles Koch.
