Stop Koch Influence at Brown University
The Koch network has been infiltrating university programs for decades, using their donations to buy influence over research in order to amplify approaches to public policy that support their regressive legislative goals at the state and federal levels. Oftentimes these policy goals seek to halt action on climate change, privatize public goods and services, and strip healthcare and other rights from our nation’s workers.
Now they’re hoping to use Brown University to advance their political agenda.
Brown is considering expanding the Political Theory Project (PTP) into a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) Center. Students on campus are demanding that the university reject this proposal. Students Against Koch Influence understands what happens when Koch money infiltrates and influences a university. From influencing curriculum (including textbooks chosen and courses offered), to faculty hires/fires, fellows selected, and more, the Koch network has molded academic departments and centers to his benefit at campuses across the country for years. Not only is academic freedom undermined, but it allows the Koch network to leverage a school’s prestigious reputation and legacy in order to launder their impact on our democracy, climate, and economy.
The Koch network has helped establish the PTP as a Koch and corporate-friendly institution. Brown University has already received over $3.8 million from the Koch network between 2005 and 2019. The Koch network has substantially increased their influence on Brown via larger donations just in the last couple of years. Brown has received over $2.2 million since 2017. With the creation of a PPE Center, the Koch network will be able to increase its influence and use Brown’s reputation to continue producing pro-corporate biased research and spread disinformation.
