George Mason University Must Rename Buchanan Hall
Ultra Right-wing economist James M. Buchanan, the namesake of Buchanan Hall, spent his career developing an economic paradigm centered around changing the rules of governance in order to protect wealthy land-owning elites from the “parasitic masses.” Buchanan was instrumental in bringing Charles Koch and his political network to George Mason University and turning the university into a vehicle for their corporate agenda.
In 2017, George Mason University re-named Mason Hall on its Fairfax campus to James Buchanan Hall, honoring Buchanan and his tenure in the university’s School of Economics, further demonstrating a commitment to regressive social and economic agendas.
After devastation to workers from the global pandemic, racial reckonings, and a Koch-funded insurrection on the United States Capitol, this moment calls for reflection and intention. George Mason University must affirm a commitment to democracy, and social and economic justice.
Honoring James M. Buchanan’s legacy is an endorsement of inherently undemocratic economic and political ideology.
