The Center for State Policy Analysis (CSPA), a new program housed by Tufts University, has Koch-linked funding which raises questions about the independence of the center’s policy analysis.
Financially supported by a grant program of the Mercatus Center, this new program intends to undertake an analysis of the Transportation Climate Initiative, a proposed regional plan to tackle carbon emissions from vehicles. The Mercatus Center is well-known for producing research that tends to oppose climate action, clean energy, and universal healthcare options. Charles Koch serves as a member of its board of directors.
The Center is also financially supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and it intends to review options for addressing rising prescription drug costs in the state. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is the state’s largest health insurance company, giving it a direct financial stake in the outcome of CSPA’s research.
The Koch Network has been investing in university programs for decades, using their donations to buy influence over research in order to amplify approaches to public policy that support their legislative goals at the state and federal levels. Oftentimes these policy goals seek to halt action on climate change, privatize public goods and services, and strip healthcare and other rights from our nation’s workers.
