The Koch brothers have stalled government action on climate change for decades. They have achieved this by funding universities, think-tanks, and advocacy groups to spread a culture of doubt about climate change amongst the general public.
Now YouTube is helping the Koch network amplify their climate change denial campaigns. YouTube is driving millions of people to watch climate change denial videos, many of which are funded by the Koch network itself. YouTube is even profiting from paid advertisements on these climate denial videos and helping climate-deniers profit, too.
Climate inaction has caused disproportionate harm to communities of color in the United States and across the globe. YouTube’s promotion and monetization of climate denial should be taken just as seriously as the platforming of white supremacist ideology and hate speech.
To demonstrate a commitment to protecting the common good, YouTube must immediately remove videos with climate misinformation from its recommendation algorithms and stop allowing paid advertisements on videos with climate misinformation.
